It doesn’t Interest me…

It doesn’t interest me what you do for a living
I want to know what you ache for
and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart’s longing.

It doesn’t interest me how old you are

I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool
for love
for your dreams
for the adventure of being alive.

It doesn’t interest me what planets are squaring your moon…
I want to know if you have touched the center of your own sorrow
if you have been opened by life’s betrayals
or have become shrivelled and closed
from fear of further pain.

I want to know if you can sit with pain
mine or your own
without moving to hide it
or fade it
or fix it.

I want to know if you can be with joy
mine or your own
if you can dance with wildness
and let the ecstasy fill you to the tips of your
fingers and toes
without cautioning us to
be careful
be realistic
to remember the limitations of being human.

It doesn’t interest me if the story you are telling me
is true.
I want to know if you can
disappoint another
to be true to yourself.

If you can bear the accusation of betrayal
and not betray your own soul.
If you can be faithless
and therefore trustworthy.

I want to know if you can see Beauty
even when it is not pretty
every day.
And if you can source your own life
from its presence.

I want to know if you can live with failure
yours and mine
and still stand on the edge of the lake
and shout to the silver of the full moon,
“Yes.”

It doesn’t interest me
to know where you live or how much money you have.
I want to know if you can get up
after a night of grief and despair
weary and bruised to the bone
and do what needs to be done
to feed the children.

It doesn’t interest me who you know
or how you came to be here.
I want to know if you will stand
in the center of the fire
with me
and not shrink back.

It doesn’t interest me where or what or with whom
you have studied.
I want to know what sustains you
from the inside
when all else falls away.
I want to know if you can be alone
with yourself
and if you truly like the company you keep
in the empty moments.

Mary Elizabeth Frye

Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning’s hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft starlight at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.

I’ve let you down, but not to fear…

…The nostalgia has set it. So although all of you have been disappointed in my non-existent travel blogging skills; I’ll write everything I can remember from day uno until the end of the wonderful summer journey. (At least it should be comfort that I didn’t write because I was so busy LIVING the life of a traveler?…no? okay, I’ll try better next time).

SPEAKING OF NEXT TIME:

I am extremely excited to let you know that the journey(s) do not end here. Hopefully for my junior year of College (so next year,WAHHOUUU!!) I will be traveling to either Argentina or Uruguay for 6 months and then Morocco for the next 6 OR United Arab Emirates (UAE) and then Morocco OR Morocco for a year. You can tell just how sure I am of everything. But feat not, this time I promise I will write, BEFORE the nostalgia sets in.

First random fact about Oviedo, España:

STATUES; I mean everywhere. I’m going to say this but don’t come hunt me down if it isn’t the official truth.  Oviedo is the city of Statues; they are everywhere!

My favorite is the one of Woody Allen. That is right; Woody Allen loves Oviedo. My friend, Melissa lived in the apartment building right in front of the dear stoned Allen. (She didn’t realize this until 3 days later, she and I have some pretty funny navigation stories; stay tuned…)

¡Bienvenido a España!

I made it in one piece! I am now in Madrid (a couple metro stops away from the actual ‘downtown’ Madrid). What an adventure!

I´ll post the story tonight, I am off to start my day!

Nonchalant feelings of the unknown melt away…

¡Hola!

It’s coming close to departure date (four more days)! I am starting to not be so ‘balzé’ about the whole struggling to communicate with everyone part of the journey. It’s been so much excitment for the past 4 months and I cannot believe that… Well, for one I survived my first year of college! (Couldn’t have done it without the love and support of my beautiful and spirited friends; a million thank you’s!). Pero now?  my nerves are almost surpassing my excitment…almost. Although now, with this whole new Dr.Laird inspired philosophy “embrace and enjoy the struggle” I feel ready to push the limits.

Ashley and I have decided that when we get there we will create a happy, ‘bring our spirits up’ dance, so that everytime we feel lonely or frustrated we know it’s time to DANCE!

As I embark on this trip I’m also going through a personal journey of mental and physical stability. This year has been really tough, both physically and mentally. & I could not do another year like this past one, so goal #2 for the summer? Finding balance.

As I slowly start getting everything packed and ready, I am slowly getting my running lungs back, it’s been a while and it isn’t welcoming me back with open arms (again this whole struggling thing :P). Anyways I am hoping to run the Athens Half-Marathon again and hopefully this time with Amelia. (wootwoot)!

Off to more packing and running.

laughs & love,
Elizabeth

Ending an interesting Journey…

& so what?  Well, starting a new one I guess.

I don’t know how I will feel, or what I am going to do, but one thing is for sure…tomorrow is the start of a new chapter.

Don’t ever let uncertainty in, don’t give it love and don’t let it become your best friend.

Laughs&Love,

E

P.S: lesson learned.

Ceci N’est Pas Une Pipe

René Magritte

I love everything this painting stands for. At first glance you disregard the inscription, but then you allow yourself to contemplate a little more and then… the light bulb turns on. It is as said, not a pipe but a representation of it. This painting challenges us to value critical knowledge and processing. As humans, we visualize images and language but almost never differentiate between the idea of “representations” vs. reality. Humans have this amazing capability of critically thinking, of understanding the idea of individuality. What is fascinating is how often we discard our “critical thinking cap” as we are bombarded with representations of reality.

Think. Individuality. Representations. Meaning. Difference.
